Dinacharya: Ayurvedic Wisdom Unveiled in Daily Practices

ब्रह्म मुहूर्त (Brahma Muhurta), the auspicious time before sunrise, beckons us to उत्तिष्ठति (Uttishthati) – rise and shine. This is a sacred period dominated by Vata energy, urging us to awaken gently. Dinacharya encourages the following practices during this time:

  1. Tongue Scraping (Jivha Nirlekhanam): Gently scrape the tongue with a copper or stainless-steel tongue scraper to remove accumulated toxins, bacteria, and debris that have settled overnight.
  2. Oil Pulling (Gandusha): Swish a tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for 10-15 minutes. This practice helps eliminate bacteria, promotes oral hygiene, and strengthens the gums.
  3. Cleansing Rituals (Shuddhi Kriyas): Perform cleansing practices such as neti (nasal irrigation) and kunjal kriya (stomach cleansing) to purify the respiratory and digestive systems.
  4. Ayurvedic Oils: Perform a gentle self-massage (Abhyanga) using Ayurvedic oils like sesame or coconut oil. This nourishes the skin, soothes the nervous system, and enhances circulation.

III. आहार – Nourishing the Body

प्रातः काले (Prātaḥ Kālē) – The morning Kapha period is dedicated to आहार (Aahaar), nourishing the body. The shloka “आहारशुद्धौ सत्त्वशुद्धिः” (Āhāraśuddhau Sattvaśuddhiḥ) emphasizes the purity of food, and Ayurvedic teas, organic snacks, and wholesome breakfast options become offerings to sustain our physical and mental vitality.

IV. समन्वय – Harmonizing Midday Energies

मध्याह्ने (Madhyāhne), the Pitta-dominated midday, invites us to seek समन्वय (Samanvaya), harmony with nature. The balanced lunch and the use of Ayurvedic oils during this period contribute to maintaining equilibrium, aligning our energies with the cosmic dance of the sun.

The shloka “रात्रौ निद्रातिथिषु स्वप्नोष्णशीतोष्णयोरपि” (Rātrau Nidrātithiṣu Svapnoṣṇaśītoṣṇayorapi) guides us to embrace the night with calming rituals, ensuring a peaceful transition to the dream world.
